Ken Vickery, PhD, Assistant Dean for Fellowships
Ken Vickery joined the Graduate College in 2009. As Assistant Dean for Fellowships, he oversees the Office of External Fellowships, the Graduate College's internal fellowship and grant competitions, and the Fellowships Office. He coordinates on-campus selection committees for external competitions, conducts proposal writing workshops for graduate students and postdocs, and individually advises graduate students applying for grants and fellowships. He has helped students win awards from the National Science Foundation, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Fulbright, German Academic Exchange Service, Department of Defense, Department of Energy, Social Science Research Council, and many others. Vickery earned a B.A. in history with high honors from the College of William and Mary, and a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Pittsburgh. Before arriving at Illinois, he served as a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Global Health & Social Medicine at Harvard University.
Dana N. Johnson, PhD, Director of External Fellowships
Dana Johnson joined the Graduate College in 2019. As Director of External Fellowships, she leads the Graduate College’s efforts to help Illinois graduate students compete for national and international fellowships and grants. She conducts proposal-writing workshops and individual advising sessions for graduate students, and serves as the point person for the American Association of University Women, Fulbright, Fulbright-Hays, and Boren Fellowship competitions. Johnson earned a B.A. in international studies with high honors from DePaul University and a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She has published on youth, education, and the “brain drain” phenomenon from Serbia in Social Anthropology and History and Anthropology.
