Our Commitment to Transgender Members of the University Community

Published on Wed, 03/08/2017 - 14:56

In light of recent national events, we want to reaffirm our commitment to LGBTQ members of our university community, in particular our trans, gender non-conforming, gender non-binary, and genderqueer students, staff, and faculty.

We will continue to protect and treat all students according to their gender identities and gender expressions, honoring chosen names, pronouns, and restroom access, as is current campus policy. We will continue to support Title IX protections, including those addressing safety from harassment and violence. All campus policies will remain in place to ensure the physical safety of everyone in the community.

As our Inclusive Illinois Committee diversity statement says, we are building, sustaining, and nurturing a campus where members treat each other with dignity and respect. We are also working closely with the LGBT Resource Center to address transphobia and homophobia on campus, and to continue to affirm and empower our trans, gender non-conforming, genderqueer, and gender non-binary students.

If you experience or witness an incident of bias on campus, please report it to the Office of the Dean of Students at 217–333–0050, tolerance@illinois.edu or online at http://go.illinois.edu/intolerance (for anonymous reporting). When a report is received, the Bias Incident Investigation and Response Team will be convened with 48 hours to determine appropriate course of action.
