Description, Responsibilities, and Qualifications

The Illinois Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) and the Graduate College office of Career and Professional Development (GC) are advertising for one Teaching Assistant at 50% for the Spring 2021 Semester. This appointment will work with an already filled 25% assistantship. The TAs will assist with the instruction of GC 295: Introduction to Undergraduate Research, the undergraduate course component of the Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program.

Undergraduate students in each of the course sections reflect a wide variety of disciplines, from humanities and arts, to STEM. For Spring 2021, GC 295 sections will be conducted virtually. Through URAP, the OUR and GC offer undergraduate students with little or no research experience the opportunity to assist advanced graduate students with their research projects. Through a one-on-one research experience with their graduate student mentor, undergraduate students learn what it means to do research, create knowledge, and produce scholarship.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Teach 3 sections of GC 295 (capped at approx. 17 students each)
  • Meet weekly with other course instructors and OUR and GC staff - generally assist the course supervisor with class functions
  • Hold 1-2 office hours per week - attend unit teaching orientations and meetings
  • Assist with preparation, set-up, and oversight of URAP-related activities
  • Manage course Moodle sections
  • Assist in coordinating graduate mentor evaluations of mentees for midterm and final grades

Qualifications:

Required

  • Expertise in research methods, broad and specific
  • Experience teaching and facilitating discussion sections
  • Graduate student at the University of Illinois in a program that has not been designated as cost-recovery or self‐supporting

Preferred

  • Experience mentoring undergraduate students
  • Familiarity with Moodle
  • Familiarity with on-line course delivery (asynchronous and synchronous)
Compensation

The rate of pay will be subject to the Graduate Employment Organization contract for a 50% appointment over a nine-month period. Those selected for the positions will be expected to work hours and meet responsibilities commensurate with those outlined by the Graduate College and the University’s agreement with the GEO (https://humanresources.illinois.edu/assets/docs/GEO-2017-22-Contract.pdf).
