Professional Development and Networking Activities

Orientation activities to get acquainted with scholars and mentors and to become familiar with the requirements and expectations of scholars at the Sloan UCEM at Illinois

Sloan events focused on fostering the development as a graduate student include: How to Succeed in Graduate School Panel Discussion, Negotiating the Mentor/Mentee Relationship, Time Management and Organizational Skills, and Sloan Mini-Conference

Networking events with Sloan UCEM scholars, affiliates, and other Graduate College Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion program participants

Participation in the Sloan Showcase as part of the Community of Scholars Program

Eligibility to participate in the annual Institute for Teaching and Mentoring sponsored by Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation
Tri-Pronged Mentoring

Peer mentoring by a junior or senior graduate student in the scholar’s home department. Assigned peer mentors help new students become familiar with departmental culture, strategies for success and resources at the University and in Champaign-Urbana

Mentoring by a Sloan mentor/academic advisor aside from scholar’s research faculty mentor

Meeting with Sloan and research faculty mentor to create an Individual Development Plan (IDP) for meeting program benchmarks and spending fellowship funds

Sloan UCEM scholars are encouraged to consider serving as peer mentors for the next cohort of Sloan and Illinois Sloan scholars
