Description of Research
Cellular concrete is an intentionally low strength, low density (500-1400 kg/m3) construction material with a cellular structure that has potential as crushable energy absorbers, low-cost fill materials, as well as acoustic and thermal insulation. Despite the wide range of uses there is little existing knowledge on how variations in microstructure impact mechanical performance. My proposed project at the University of Illinois takes an in-depth look at the capabilities and limitations of cellular concrete through three-dimensional microstructural investigations, high strain rate testing, micromechanical modeling, and large-scale simulations.
