Description of Research
Experimentally diagnosing fast chemistry related to initiation and detonation of explosives has been an outstanding issue in the field of energetic materials. A table-top system developed by the Dlott group has provided the means to study miniature explosives charges under shock compression resulting in experiments that are safe and capable of high throughput. My research focuses on studying the relationships between explosive crystal’s microstructure and the initiation process. By using the aforementioned table-top system, we are able to shock crystals of high explosives and use various spectroscopic diagnostics to probe their chemistries.
